In the 12th Asian Games 1994, He Cihong won the gold medals of women's 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 4*100m medley relay. Among Ningbo athletes competing for the Asian Games, He Cihong was one of players winning the most gold medals in one event.
He Cihong who was 10 years old joined the swimming team of Ningbo Sports School. Her talent was gradually revealed. He Cihong who was 12 years old joined Zhejiang Sports School. He Cihong who was 18 years old joined the national team. She became one of "Rising Stars" of Chinese swimming team. Between 1991 and 1993, she swept the champions of all women's 100m backstroke events in the national swimming competitions. Especially in 1993, she broke the Asian records for 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke for five times.
In the First FINA World Championships (25m) 1993, He Cihong won the gold medals of 200m backstroke and 4*100m medley relay, and set two world records. Because of these achievements, she was reputed as the World's Best Female Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World (USA).
In Rome World Championships 1994, He Cihong broke two world records, and won three gold medals. The Asian records and world records of 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke set by He Cihong were maintained for many years.
