FUKUOKA, Japan, July 12 (Xinhua) -- China's all-conquering diving team is aiming to replicate their success from the previous year's Budapest Worlds by sweeping all 13 gold medals in Fukuoka, Japan.
The diving events will take place from July 14 to 22 at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool, featuring top divers from around the world. The Fukuoka Worlds also serve as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the top 12 finishers in the 3m and 10m individual events securing an Olympic quota spot for their national or regional Olympic Committee. Additionally, the top three teams (excluding France) in the men's and women's 3m and 10m synchronized events will earn the same privilege.
"Our goal is to secure all the tickets for Paris 2024," stated team leader Zhou Jihong. "We are fully prepared, and we aim to win more gold medals."
Zhou acknowledges that the Chinese divers are not invincible at the World Championships and expects them to face significant challenges in certain events.
However, she believes China has an advantage in the women's 10m platform, which has been dominated by Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan in recent Diving World Cup series. Similarly, Chen Yiwen and Chang Yani are considered title favorites in the women's 3m springboard, although they will face tough competition from the United States and host country Japan.
Leading the men's team is four-time world champion and Olympic synchro champion Wang Zongyuan, who will partner with Long Daoyi in the synchro 3m springboard event. Triple world champion Yang Hao will participate in both the individual and synchro 10m platform, alongside partner Lian Junjie.
"I hope to stand on the top podium in both individual and synchro events," expressed Yang. "I will give my utmost effort to achieve the best results."
The men's platform has been a weakness for the "Dream Team," as the 10m platform synchro was the only event they didn't win at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
"We must not underestimate our rivals," cautioned Zhou. "Jack Laugher of Britain is a formidable competitor in men's springboard, and divers from Ukraine, Japan, Australia, and Canada are all very strong in the men's platform."
The diving competition will feature a total of 27 sessions, covering 13 events, including men's and women's individual and synchronized events, two mixed synchronized events, and a mixed team event.
