Hangzhou Asian Para Games Village Classification Centre spares no effort to do classification work

The Classification Centre of the Hangzhou Asian Para Games Village undertakes the important task of classifying athletes with impairments for the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. During the Games, 80% of the classification work will be fulfilled by the Centre.

"Firstly, classifiers will follow the 'International Standard of Eligible Impairments' recognised by the International Paralympic Committee to assess athletes' impairments and determine if they meet the minimum impairment criteria for their respective events."

Xu Min, Deputy Director of the Classification Centre, explained, "If they meet the criteria, participants will be assigned to various event categories based on the extent to which their impairments restrict their activities."

Classifiers will also evaluate para athletes' in-game performance to determine if any adjustments to the classification assessments is necessary, ensuring fair and equitable competition.

The classifiers for the Hangzhou Asian Para Games are appointed by various international single-sport organisations. They are the professionals with medical backgrounds, particularly experienced in neurotrauma and rehabilitation assessment. Their comprehensive medical knowledge enables them to accurately evaluate athletes' actual conditions during the classification process.

Qi Yongsheng, head of the Classification Information Group, pointed out "The Hangzhou Asian Para Games consists of 22 sports and 564 predefined events, each with distinct classification assessment methods. The classification work is demanding and intricate, with a significant level of difficulty."

Du Jinhong is conducting training for all staff members.

The Classification Centre Director Du Jinhong emphasised, "We are fully committed to providing high-quality classification services to athletes and classifiers, ensuring a conducive classification environment. This will enable every para athlete to have equal opportunities to participate in a fair competition."

Classification Centre Deputy Director Sun Gang is providing pre-service training to volunteers for test events.
