In Hangzhou, individuals with impairments would find dedicated pilot parking spaces for their motorised WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles) outside the Cuibai Road Metro Station in the Xihu District, the first of its kind in Hangzhou.
Motorised WAVs are specially designed for people with lower limb impairments. It would need a space of at least 2.1 metres wide for getting on and off due to their wider and longer bodies than other non-motorised ones.
The two-section parking space design takes into account the need of ample space for individuals with impairments to get on and off, with a wheelchair symbol indicating the dedicated parking area for wheelchairs and the diagonal lines guiding the passage for individuals with impairments in the wheelchairs. The parking space is conveniently located near the entrances to lifts, so that users, after getting well-parked and taking out the wheelchairs, could directly take the lifts for entering metro stations.
The Xihu District Commission of Urban Management plans to invite individuals with impairments to experience the dedicated parking spaces for further improvement and expanded use. Moreover, the district has marked 52 "tactile paving" lines on roads such as Huanglong Road and Fengtan Road to facilitate the walks of individuals with visual impairments.
