Surfskating: more than a sport

If you ask what is the most popular sport in China this year, surfskating must be one of the answers.

On some of the China's social platforms, the keyword "surfskating" comes up as a buzzword. On lifestyle-sharing platform Xiaohongshu, there are over 150,000 pieces of articles sharing experiences of surfskating. While on short video platform Douyin, Chinese version of TikTok, videos related to surfskating have been played for over 260 million times.

When night falls, Hangzhou's Wentao Road running track, the city's most famous outdoor civil sports venue, will be filled with people playing skateboard. Young people are not necessarily the majority in playing the sport.

Xu Yao, a part-time surfskating coach, said that he is seeing diversified groups of people participating in surfskating.

"There are of course young people under 25, but there are also those in their 30s and 40s and I'm also seeing mother-kid groups," said Xu. "I think that is because this is a relatively easy-to-command sport with social functions."
