Chinese Chess Team eyeing gold at Hangzhou Asian Games

On September 22, the Chinese Chess Team for the 19th Asian Games held a departure ceremony at Hangzhou Qi-Yuan (Zhili) Chess Hall, putting an end to the training session.

The chess event will take place at the Hangzhou Qi-Yuan (Zhili) Chess Hall for four gold medals.

The men's team consists of Wei Yi, Bu Xiangzhi, Xu Xiangyu and Ma Qun,among whom Wei Yi stands as the world's youngest record holder with an international rating surpassing 2,700. Bu Xiangzhi, a medalist of two prior Asian Games, joins him. Both are determined to clinch gold in the Games.

The women's team includes Hou Yifan, Zhu Jin'er, Tan Zhongyi and Zhai Mo. Hou Yifan has won two gold medals in the individual and team events at Guangzhou Asian Games, while Tan Zhongyi is a world champion. The Chinese Chess Women's Teamis strong enough to compete for two gold medals in the individual and team events.

The Indian team is the strongest competitor for the Chinese team. Two prominent Indian players have won medals at the previous Asian Games. Still, the Indian team has the highest-ranked player on the latest international rating list by the International Chess Federation.

In the chess events of the previous Asian Games, the Chinese team has won a total of 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medals, ranking first in the gold medal tally as well as the overall medal tally. The Indian team follows with 2 gold and 2 bronze medals.
