The salty sea breeze brings the news of the neighbour. The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou will be postponed to September next year. The Olympic Committee of Malaysia has sent its best wishes to HAGOC: Wishing the Hangzhou Asian Games to be one of the best in history.

When it comes to the sports of Malaysia, no one would miss the legendary player in the badminton world, Lee Chong Wei. As a top player in Malaysia, he has played against Lin Dan, the Chinese gold medallist, over 40 times, giving the audience an interpretation of the true meaning of the Olympic spirit. This time, Lee accepted an interview with Hangzhou 2022 to explain his expectations for the Asian Games to the Chinese and foreign readers.

"Badminton has given me hopes for my life"

What is the most famous sport in Malaysia?

Badminton. Being the number one sport in Malaysia, badminton is widely welcomed. The badminton legends like Lee Chong Wei are as much loved as the sport itself. He is an icon in the hearts of many fans.

Looking back at his career, he said, "Badminton has given me hopes for my life. I enjoyed playing badminton when I was a kid. Although I have gone through a lot of difficulties, I managed to set badminton as my career and most importantly I have made my family, my friends and my fellow Malaysian proud of my achievements throughout my badminton career."

People may begrudge him the title as an "uncrowned king", but in doing what he loves, he has met his life partner, Mew Choo, who has accompanied him through all his sufferings on the way to the peak of his life.

On June 13, 2019, Lee Chong Wei announced his retirement, officially ending his 19 year long career. However, he has never lost his passion for badminton.

"My passion for badminton will never end, I will continue to promote badminton with different roles such as an advisor, a brand ambassador, the Chef de Mission of the Malaysian Contingent to the XXXII Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and many others." he said.

Best wishes for the Asian Games

According to his resume, Lee Chong Wei has participated in three Asian Games--the 15th Doha Asian Games in 2006, the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010 and the 17th Incheon Asian Games in 2014. He won a silver (2010) and two bronzes (2006&2014) in men's singles and two bronze medals (2006&2014) in the men's team event.

"I have fond memories playing against Lin Dan in the men's singles final at the 16th Asian Games Guangzhou on Sunday, 21st November 2010, where Lin Dan finally won in a tie-breaking game." Thinking of his past sporting career, Lee Chong Wei made no effort to hide his high regard for his old competitor, Lin Dan. As the Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou soon, he gave his best wishes at the end.

"I trust the capability of China in hosting the Multi-Sport Games and I believe the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) will be able to organise the 19th Asian Games successfully. I wish HAGOC all the very best to deliver the best ever Asian Games in history."
