"Zero" Carbon Asian Games

Report on the work of Zhejiang Provincial Government for 2022 pointed out: "we shall uphold the ideas of hosting a green and qualified Asian Games, and ensuring highly standardized construction, management and operation of the Asian Games venues and village."

As a large-scale international sports event, Hangzhou 2022 has committed to be "green, smart, economical and ethical". The green concept "Zero Carbon" is manifested everywhere during the construction of the venues. Hangzhou spares no effort to set a sample in hosting "Zero Carbon" Asian Games.

Zhejiang Government has selected the construction site of the Asian Games Village to build the landscape greenbelt for four consecutive years. The government has also launched the voluntary tree planting and Asian Games Forest co-building activities, and created a nearly-4km-long "green" ribbon on the bank of Qiantang River through continuous construction, leaving the beautiful scenery for the Green Asian Games.

For the first time, a professional and digitized team of "Zero Carbon" engineers are mobilized to ensure "Zero Carbon" electricity consumption during Hangzhou 2022. The team provides 13 professional services with three categories, namely, construction of "zero carbon" transportation facilities, "zero carbon" smart energy venue, green electricity transaction at venues, etc.

Hangzhou 2022 will use clean energy in power supply. A steady flow of clean energy, including water, electricity, wind power and photoelectricity, will be conducted from Liangshan Prefecture in Sichuan Province, Ningxia and Xinjiang to Asian Games Venues and Village in Hangzhou via the EHV Grid.

Numerous Creations of "1" in Asian Games

The mission of Hangzhou 2022 is "Asian Games for Better City". Since the successful bid for Hangzhou 2022, a number of economic centers around the venues are developed. The numerous creations of pioneering "1" indicate that Hangzhou is well prepared.

The first creation is Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre that draws much attention for its big lotus-shaped design. The first pile of the centre was driven in January 2010; five years later, Hangzhou 2022's bid succeeded.

There are many interesting figures about Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre. With land area of 286,700 square kilometers, and floor area of 229,000 square meters, the 6-storied building has a capacity of 80,800 seats with a basement garage that provides 3000 parking spaces. Interesting enough, the big lotus constitutes of 28 large petals and 27 small petals.

With steel consumption of only 28,000 tons, Big Lotus has won "China Gold Award for Steel Structure", the highest honor for steel structure work in China, and won "China Construction Engineering Luban Award" in February 2021.

"∞" Represents Sustainability

The architectural design of Hangzhou 2022 pays attention to serving the public after the event. Therefore, the design is the combination between "green" and "smart", it is also the combination between human and nature, and between nature and architecture.

Gongshu Canal Sports Park is a large-scale comprehensive urban park integrated by recreational greenbelt, stadium, gymnasium and business streets. Featuring crisscrossed rivers and lush shady trees, the park well expresses the integration of the "green venue" and "urban planning". After Hangzhou 2022, it will serve the public for a long time.

During the reconstruction of Huanglong Sports Centre, "a reaction type mobile crushing station" is designed to automatically sort out the crushed construction wastes produced in the renovation and turn them into semi-products for recycle use.

The design of the venues at Fuyang, Tonglu, Chun'an, and other counties along Qiantang River, highlights the local features, adding local features to venues, showing unique cultural patterns and protecting ecological civilization.

Venue Convertible within 8 Hours

The gymnasium and aquatic sports arena of Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre are the only two venues in Zhejiang that can serve international competitions for both ice hockey and basketball games. Within 8 hours, the conversion of the venue can be swiftly made.

61 Automatic Meteorological Stations

All the automatic meteorological stations in 56 venues and five villages and Sub-villages (athletes sub-village) of Hangzhou 2022 have been completed and put into use so far. All the competitions have their specific meteorological stations.

Awesome 66

Qiantang Roller Sports Centre features the design of "whirling roller" or "spiral top" with a large-span steel structure in shape of "66". "66", a frequent buzzword meaning awesome used by young netizens and is homophonic to "skating" in Chinese.

24800-sqm Pearl-shaped Sports Centre

The steel awning of Chun'an Jieshou Sports Centre velodrome glitters like a pearl in the sunlight from bird's view. With a floor area of 24,800 square meters, the steel-structured roof has the largest span of steel structure in Chun'an.

1009m Breakwater

The 1009m breakwater of Ningbo Xiangshan Sailing Centre is built with earths and stones from nearby quarry. The quarry was then transformed to sea area with a prefabricated hollow board processing plant, thus greatly reducing the cost for the construction.

34000 pcs Rotating Shutters

Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre installs more than 34000 pcs of rotatable shutters on the eastern and southern curtain walls of the comprehensive gymnasium. In the sunlight, the artwork "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" forms with wonderful visual effects. The painting changes as the position of the sun changes. There is an adjustable light trough with a smart optical illuminator behind each shutter. At nightfall, the multi-media control program will create a fantastic style of "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains", fully showing the beauty of Fuchun landscape.
