Handover of OCA Flag Marks Asian Games’Arrival in Hangzhou Time

At 20:00 Beijing Time (19:00 Jakarta Local Time), September 2, 2018, the Closing Ceremony of the 18th Asian Games kicked off at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium(GBK) in Jakarta. The city of Hangzhou, as the host city of the next Games joined the flag handover ceremony and staged us Hangzhou Time cultural performance, sending its sincere invitation to Asia and the whole world——Welcome to Hangzhou in 2022!

There were no empty seats at GBK, where the Closing Ceremony was staged in a fevered atmosphere. OCA President, H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah delivered a speech and announced the closing of the 18th Asian Games. After 16 days of intense competition, the athletes and spectators in GBK jointly witnessed the successful conclusion of the Games.

Next came the historic moment for the Olympic Movement in Asia and the city of Hangzhou, as witnessed by the hundreds of millions of audience in and outside GBK. At the flag handover ceremony, which is one of the most important segments of the Closing Ceremony, Mr.Erick Thohir, President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), President of INASGOC, Mr.Muddai Madang, Vice President of KOI and Mrs. Helen Sarita de Lima, Secretary General of KOI handed the first Asian Games torch, the first Asian Games flag and the OCA flag in sequence to OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who then passed them one by one to Mr.Gou Zhongwen, President of HAGOC, President of the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China. Mr.Gou then handed them to Mr.Xu Liyi, Vice President and Secretary General of HAGOC, Deputy Secretary General of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee and Mayor of Hangzhou. Mr.Xu held high the first Asian Games torch and the first Asian Games flag for the audience and waved the OCA flag. As he did so, the audience broke into thunderous applause. From this moment on, the Asian Games had officially arrived in Hangzhou Time.

Afterwards, the National Flag of the People’s Republic of China was hoisted and the National Anthem of the People’s Republic of China was played. The solemn anthem resounded up above in the air at GBK.

After the flag handover ceremony, the promotional video of Hangzhou City was played on the big screen. The three-minute video covering the Liangzhu Culture, the Grand Canal, the West Lake, as well as entrepreneurship, innovation and public participation in sports showcased the unique flavor and splendid grace of Hangzhou as a city of innovative vigor, historical and cultural heritage, ecological excellence and oriental lifestyle.

Following the video play, Hangzhou Time cultural performance themed with Aspirations brought a feast to the eyes of the audience. A lotus leaf carrying a lovely girl from Hangzhou flew onto the stage, where she poured the water of the West Lake from a 5,000-year-old pottery jar unearthed in Liangzhu, Hangzhou. The “dancing elf” flying off the scroll painting of Beijing Olympic —— a Hangzhou girl named Yin Shuo, led West Lake Girls to dance friskily to the melodious music of Jiangnan bamboo flute and ancient pipa under the full moon. As the music picked up the tempo, a group of stylish young singers led by the youth idol Jackson Yee came onto stage, singing together the dynamic theme song Aspirations. At the same time, five groups of smart, robotic screens danced to the music, displaying the power and marvel of modern technology. On the central and round stages at both sides, the acrobatic performance Ballet on Shoulder echoed with each other, symbolizing the holy flame of the Games and embodying the sportsmanship.

Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, an outstanding representative of Hangzhou citizens, came onto the stage hand in hand with the Hangzhou girl who held the Liangzhu pottery jar with water from the West Lake. Coming along with them was Sun Yang, the world-renowned swimmer from Hangzhou. Together they extended warm invitation to all the Asian athletes and friends to Hangzhou in 2022.

Amid the cheers from the audience, “Tides Surging” ——the emblem of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 rose up, telling Asia and the whole world that Hangzhou is ready to meet them at the 19th Asian Games in 2022.

A feast to the eyes at the Closing Ceremony of the 18th Asian Games, Hangzhou Time cultural performance presented a vivid picture of the aspirations of people in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province and China for the Asian Games, as well as their wishes for building a community of shared future for Asia and mankind.

At the same time, people in Hangzhou were gathering at city landmarks such as the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center and Wulin Plaza to watch the the flag handover ceremony and Hangzhou Time Cultural Performance. By participating in a variety of sports gala activities, people in Hangzhou celebrated Asian Games’ arrival in Hangzhou Time. The entire city was brimming with lights and passion. In the co-host cities of Ningbo, Wenzhouand Jinhua, tens of thousands of people were also gathering in city squares and stadiums to watch the live broadcast, celebrating this unforgettable moment with pride and joy.

New Era of China, New Asian Games in Hangzhou.
